Every healthcare provider that performs a
service receives payment for these services by filing a
claim with the patient’s health insurance. This process is
referred to as an encounter. Codes exists for all types of
patient encounters (procedures, tests, treatments, etc.)
that take place in a medical office, clinic or hospital.
There are even codes for a patient’s condition such as a
headache, backache, high blood pressure, etc. A medical
coder is responsible for finding and assigning the
appropriate codes to ensure proper reimbursement.
